Smart speaker ceases Domestic Violence by calling 911 in New Mexico
Police in the Unites States say a smart speaker played a “Life-saving role” during a domestic dispute occurrence.
We don’t deny smart devices are just to play some tasks which we ask them to do. Sometimes these devices surprise us time to time to that they can be a life savior or part of our family.
This time a smart speaker played a potentially life-saving role near Albuquerque, New Mexico | ABC News delineated on Sunday.
Eduardo Barros was having conversations while sitting with his girlfriend and her daughter on July 2, last week. But later on, the couple got into an altercation which turned physical.
Mr. Barros threatened to kill her with a firearm, shouted: “Did you call the sheriffs?”.
A smart speaker which was connected to surround sound system inside the house recognized partial voice “Call the sheriffs” as a voice command and called the emergency service, 911. as per by Sherrif Department.
The security people arrived at the house following the call. They managed to get the woman and her daughter of the house and Mr. Barros had sent to custody after an hour-long standoff.
“The unexpected use of this new technology to contact emergency services has possibly helped save a life. This amazing technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation,” Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III said in a statement to ABC News.
Last time, Amazon handed over data (covered by gizmodo) from its Echo device to police investigating a murder, and this time another smart speaker called the police and ceased a violent domestic dispute.
Though ABC originally stated that device as a Google Home. But later found out that it was not the case (the device in question hasn’t been named yet).
This doesn’t mean that police will welcome smart speakers and similar kind of hardware with their open arms. Although they can lead to rescues like this incident and could theoretically provide evidence in criminal cases. There could also be moments where gadgets inform police in response to innocuous remarks or TV show dialogue. as commented by Engadget commented.
